EAGLESTAR! ALL THE ROADS WE HAVE TO WALK ARE WINDING AND ALL THE LIGHTS THAT LIGHT THE WAY ARE BLINDING
* * *
Eaglestar liked the silence. It was comforting, and StarClan knows she could use comfort right about now. It had only been a quarter moon since her leadership ceremony, and she was still feeling the shock from becoming her Clan's leader. It was her job to guide, protect, and defend her Clan, no matter what the cost, Now, the silence was a best friend to her. She needed the peace it brought, and she knew Sunningrocks was just the place to find that peace.
The ginger and white tabby had made her way across the stepping stones- it was too early in Newleaf to swim- and climbed the rocks easily. Years of swimming had given her legs a strength that nearly matched the late SkyClan. The thought of the lost Clan made her shiver, despite the warm breeze that ruffled her fur at that very moment. She had been a deputy when SkyClan had left- it had been shortly before Graystar's death. The shock of the event hadn't completely worn off of any cat, with the exception of the ones too young to realize the seriousness of what had happened.
But all worry aside, Eaglestar was content to lay on the rocks, which had gone slightly warm under the constant glow of the sun. She exhaled loudly, her ginger flank rising and falling, enjoying the quiet. To any onlooker, she was completely unawares, lying on her side on the very rock where her apprentice had died moons ago. But ever since that tragic event, she had never been able to completely relax when near Sunningrocks. Even now, she was slightly tense, and her ears were pricked to the sounds of life all around her. If a ThunderClan warrior dared attack her, she would catch wind of it rather quickly. That is, if she didn't get lost in thought first.

``Stormstar ------thunderclan leader
The tom padded through his territory, keeping his senses alert. His paws treaded silently along the leafy, green floor. He pushed passed ferns and crouched beneath it. There was a thrush just on the other side. He glanced up and saw Sunningrocks. Why had his paws carried him here? Surely he didn't want to remember the way that Berrystar had been too soft on Riverclan to allow them to have this beautiful patch of territory.
Those fishfaces didn't need this territory anyway. It was just a lounging place for them. Luxurious territory, unneeded except for a spot to lay in the sun and taunt Thunderclan. This was always the strife between Riverclan and Thunderclan, and probably always would be, even after the current leaders and generations walked with Starclan.
He sighed, sending fern fronds away from his face, startling the thrush he wasn't very intent on at all. Prey was running well in his territory, so he would come across more later that morning. He heard pawsteps approaching from the river's banks and, sure enough, there was a Riverclan cat. He looked closer and realized with a jolt that it was their leader, Eaglestar. He snorted. How arrogant of her! Strolling onto Sunningrocks and laying there without checking around to see if there were any threats. He might just give her something to worry about. He stood up, bending fronds out of his way, not bothering to mask his pawsteps now.
"Enjoying what isn't yours, I see," Stormstar said with a coldness in his tone. The tom wrapped his tail around his paws as he sat down, just on his side of the border, and fixed his intense stare at the young Riverclan leader, trying to keep the irritation out of his eyes.

EAGLESTAR! ALL THE ROADS WE HAVE TO WALK ARE WINDING AND ALL THE LIGHTS THAT LIGHT THE WAY ARE BLINDING
* * *
Eaglestar's ears pricked as a startled thrush abandoned its place on the ground where the trees met the clearing where Sunningrocks was found. Her mind clicked into gear and she leaped to her paws in a heartbeat, cursing herself for not noticing the fresh ThunderClan smell in the air. She whirled to face the direction the scent came from, and found herself facing none other than Stormstar, the newly appointed leader.
The RiverClan leader was still standing on the warm rocks, which she knew gave her an advantage. If Stormstar dared to trespass, or attempt to attack her, she had the upper hand. Being higher up than your opponent in a fight could make all the difference, Eaglestar knew. But she remembered the last time she had participated in a battle for Sunningrocks, and it had ended in tragedy. She was in no mood to fight here today.
"Stormstar," she meowed curtly, not bothering to nod her head politely as she would to another leader. "I would ask how ThunderClan is faring, but you seem to be a good example- fat and lazy, as always. Have you been taking food from Twolegs?" Eaglestar chuckled slightly, but didn't let herself act too smug. "Oh, wait, that's right- not only do you eat their food, but you take in their kittypets, too." She knew how soft ThunderClan was to outsiders- all of the Clans knew it, and ThunderClan wasn't well liked because of it.
The ginger and white she-cat sat down where she stood, curling her fluffy tail around her paws to show that she didn't plan on leaving anytime soon. Her amber eyes betrayed no warmth or friendliness. After all, ThunderClan were far from friends of RiverClan. She saw Stormstar as another leader- one to be respected, but still not worth her worry or her time. He hadn't given her any reason to like him, so why should she? It was in this frame of mind that Eaglestar sat, waiting for some kind of retort from the opposing leader.

``Stormstar ------thunderclan leader
As the thrush flew away, the tom saw Eaglestar jump. He chuckled to himself. She seemed so aloof now-a-days, so much so, that it seemed that she had better things to do than take care of her clan. Laying on Sunningrocks was one example. Stormstar almost bristled at the sight of a Riverclan cat on what should be his.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his chest expanding and showing the muscles in his body. He stayed on his side of the border, tail still curled, as he listened to her tauntings. He snorted. "I'm not the one lounging around, across the river from my clan. Looks like you've been eating more than just fish, Eaglestar."
His eyes gleamed with mischief. He was stirring up trouble and he knew it, but it was all in good fun. There was no harm to be done today, unless she decided to attack, which would only provoke a counterattack from him if she crossed the border. He worked his claws into the grass, tearing clumps out as she practically called Thunderclan warriors a bunch of kittypets. His hackles started to raise, but he stayed seated, fixing a stare at the Riverclan leader. How dare she! She was asking for a new scar to mar her pretty little pelt.
He respected her, but there was something unusual between them. Something that went beyond a normal Clan rivalry between leaders. He couldn't quite place it, but he knew that there was something about Eaglestar that he didn't like very much. Wildstar of Shadowclan and Froststar had his respect much more than this young she-cat.
He decided to change the subject to a neutral topic instead of further provoking the young she-cat. He sighed heavily, as though getting rid of a burden - his anger. His demeanor completely changed. His hackles laid flat again and he tried to keep the coldness out of his voice. They had fought for Sunningrocks and he would get them back one day. "How's the prey running for Riverclan?" He looked up, this time without the icy bitterness in his eyes. Just an intense yellow.

EAGLESTAR! ALL THE ROADS WE HAVE TO WALK ARE WINDING AND ALL THE LIGHTS THAT LIGHT THE WAY ARE BLINDING
* * *
Eaglestar flicked her tail back and forth calmly, though she felt embarrassed to have been caught napping on Sunningrocks when she could have been hunting or helping out around camp- or even helping the medicine cat collect herbs, for StarClan's sake! But she hadn't expected Stormstar to come along, and she had just wanted a bit of time to herself. She had only been a leader for a short while, and the shock hadn't yet worn off. Constantly dealing with the Clan's problems was a new feeling to her, and she needed time to take everything in.
The ThunderClan leader seemed to want to ruin that for her. He had been in his position longer than she, and they both knew that well. And Eaglestar was aware that her being on Sunningrocks didn't help at all. There had been more blood spilled over this piece of land than any other territory in the forest. All of that unresolved tension hung in the air now, as she taunted the ThunderClan leader mercilessly.
Her eyes burned a darker amber as she took in his newest insult. "I'll have you know that RiverClan are some of the most fierce warriors in the forest," she stated defensively. "And the most unlikely to follow your example in eating Twoleg mush." Of course, Eaglestar had no idea what kittypet food was really like, but from what she had heard, it was soft and much like rabbit droppings. It didn't sound appetizing in the least to the young RiverClan leader.
The sudden calm demeanor that Stormstar showed her surprised Eaglestar. His hackles lowered, fur flattened, and the fire in his eyes returned to a neutral yellow. She didn't completely let down her guard- her apprentice training and real battle experience had taught her enough to know that an opponent would try to get you to open up to them, to calm down, to relax. If that was what Stormstar was planning, the RiverClan leader was not going to fall for it. "Fine. This Newleaf has been good to us." She stated, not giving too much away. "And how is ThunderClan?"

``Stormstar ------thunderclan leader
The ThunderClan leader knew that she would go on taunting him and he would go back to camp with an angry scowl on his face. He didn't want that, but he would tell the rest of the Clan that Eaglestar had been sunning herself without a warrior escort or anyone else around. He mused at the thought of what his warriors would say about her, but quickly pushed the thought away.
He ignored her comment about kittypet food. He and his current warriors had never tasted it, and as of right now, the only warriors he had were Clanborn. Their parents may have been kittypets, and they were elders now, enjoying their share of luxury in exchange for their hard work and dedication to the Clan.
When he had dropped his guard, he noticed her guard went up. She should know by now that leaders don't normally attack one another when they're alone. Then a thought crossed his mind, Run that idea passed ShadowClan.... He chuckled at the idea, trying to keep the amusement out of his eyes. He didn't want her to think that he was laughing at her.
"ThunderClan is doing well. Prey is plentiful and we have new kits on the way." He reported as though he were at a Gathering, and then realized that she would hear this soon at the upcoming Gathering, which was only a few days away. He glanced over at her, not sure whether to ask her this or not. He plugged forward with his thoughts anyway. "Have you chosen a Deputy yet?"
He had not heard of any such news from the patrols' reports. His choice had been an easy one; he had known his deputy all her life, and had chosen carefully. He was extremely confident in his choice. Dovefeather would do the Clan a lot of good if he happened to pass, which was unlikely because he still had all nine lives left.

EAGLESTAR! ALL THE ROADS WE HAVE TO WALK ARE WINDING AND ALL THE LIGHTS THAT LIGHT THE WAY ARE BLINDING
* * *
Eaglestar kept her guard up as Stormstar calmly questioned her. It was a casual exchange of words, she noted, but the new RiverClan leader was reluctant to take any chances. She behaved politely but confidently, as she would at a Gathering. There was a Gathering coming up in a few days, she noted, so anything that passed between the two leaders would likely come up again at the upcoming event. But she still didn't want to disclose too much information. As a new leader, her Clan was still particularly vulnerable to attack. But, she noted, the river helped defend her territory well. ThunderClan- or any other Clan at all- were loathe to even use the stepping stones, which could be slippery and wet.
Finally convincing herself that she needed not to fear for an attack from the rival Clan, she let her guard down, only to raise her hackles slightly as Stormstar asked about a deputy. In truth, she hadn't decided on one yet. The shock of being a leader was fresh to her- she hadn't expected Graystar's life to be cut so short, and she was still secretly mourning Reedheart. He had died on these very rocks where she stood, and, stifling a shiver, Eaglestar bounded off the rocks to stand facing Stormstar a little too quickly. Acting casual to ward off any more questions, she decided to take the most honest yet secretive approach possible. "I haven't been a leader for very long," she stated, though this was obvious. In fact, this would be her first Gathering as leader- though she had gone in Graystar's place near the end of his life, when she was still a deputy, so she was accustomed to how the Gatherings ran. "I honestly haven't decided on a single cat yet. I've been assigning patrols, though I will have a deputy by the Gathering at the latest." She added an unnecessary firmness to the word 'will', to ensure the ThunderClan leader that her Clan was as strong as ever. She was still suspicious of the rival leader.
Eaglestar hesitated for a second. She should probably move the conversation back to him- she had spoken about herself and her Clan enough, and the worst she could do was blurt out something she didn't want the other Clan to know. Steering the topic away from herself, she flicked her tail politely at the trees. "I see newleaf is progressing well in your forest," The trees had already begun to grow back their green leaves, coming in thick clumps of rich, smooth green. It was a beautiful site, she had to admit, and the prey must be running well in their territory. But the fish were swimming well in hers, and she was not jealous for very long. She had all she wanted right here in RiverClan. That is, most of what she wanted.
